Casino Licenses in NZ

New Zealand's Regulated Casinos

Kiwi players can now enjoy legal gambling all thanks to casino licenses. Online gambling has been a part of New Zealand’s culture for a while now. Having gone under some strict regulation periods, the legality of online gambling by the Department of Internal Affairs has changed the online gambling industry for NZ players. A casino licence binds the casino to rules that protect their players. The laws also allows New Zealanders to legally play at brick and mortar casinos as well as casino sites even if they are not based in NZ.

Before depositing your hard-earned money into a casino, it is essential to ensure that the casino is permitted and entirely regulated with a casino license. The last thing you want to do is win at your favourite casino table and never get to see your winnings because it was an illegal or rogue casino. We have put together a guide that explains how casino licences work, the ambling Act, and some of the New Zealand’s governmental agencies that control gambling. Our guide is not only suitable for casino operators and owners, but also suitable for Kiwi players to ensure that they know what to look out for in terms of legal and safe casinos.

The Gambling Act of 2003

This regulatory framework is the most critical legislation affecting gambling in NZ. The Act replaces the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1977 and the Casino Control Act 1990. The New Zealand regulations of the Act ensure that the national community benefits from the profits made from gambling.

The Kiwi law dictates that players have to be 18 to purchase tickets for games run by the Lotteries Commission, bet on horses and sports games. In terms of gambling in a casino, players have to be 20 years of age.

Objectives of the Gambling Act of 2003

  • Control gambling growth in NZ.
  • Minimize and prevent the harm instigated by gambling.
  • Authorize some gambling and exclude the rest.
  • Urge responsible gambling.
  • Enforce the fairness and truthfulness of casino games.
  • Control crime and dishonesty linked with gambling.
  • Ensure that money made from gambling also benefits the community.
  • Facilitate community involvement in decisions about the provision of gambling.

NZ Government Regulatory Agencies

  • The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) administers the gambling legislation and ensures that casino operators comply with legislation.
  • The Ministry of Health coordinates and funds problem gambling services.
  • The Gambling Commission handles all the casino license matters from applications and renewals, to changes and complaints.

Casino Licenses Overview

A casino that has a license puts players at ease knowing that the casino’s operations are in good form.  Online casino sites target several countries and have to ensure that they have a license for each of those countries. When applying for a casino licence in New Zealand, operators need to consider several things such as player’s personal data, security technology in terms of money safety, and responsible gambling. Once the license is obtained, the requirements need to be catered to. Should there be any violations of the permit, it may be cancelled or the casino can be fined. The Kiwi Casinos team of experts make sure that the casinos we list are safe and regulated. Most importantly, they check that the casinos have their casino licenses.
