Gambling Advertising Under Scrutiny as Campaigners Call for Ban

Anti-gambling campaigners around the world have recently raised great concern over the effects of gambling advertising. In the United Kingdom, public consultations are already underway regarding whether advertising should be banned. It seems that campaigners in New Zealand are hoping to push for a similar consultation with their own state legislators.

At this present moment, many anti-gambling campaigners in New Zealand believe that products and services that allow people to place wagers on casino games or sports do not accurately advertise their product. It is stated that some adverts advertise gambling as a fun pastime or even, at times, a fun activity the whole family can enjoy.

Campaigners believe that such advertisements should not be allowed to exist, or at the very least should contain a warning to indicate the dangers associated with gambling. The tricky part with enforcing such laws is that sometimes advertisements don’t even explicitly advertise gambling – or gambling doesn’t play a primary role in the whole promotion. (Think of a 30-second television spot simply featuring a sportsman getting ready for a game, and ending with the brand’s name at the end.)

Gambling Advertising Leading to Rise in Participation?

One of the biggest gripes NZ anti-gambling campaigners have had with advertisements is that participation level in wagering activities since the appearance of such promotions started becoming common place. This is particularly true in relation to younger and underage bettors.

Currently, it is estimated that about 2% of New Zealanders suffer from some form of gambling addiction, and that the effects thereof affect at least six additional people, such as family members. In addition, recent studies have suggested that problem gambling causes three times more harm to communities around the country than drug abuse, and about two times more harm than diabetes.

Overall, it has been stated that about NZ$2.3 billion is lost each year due to excessive gambling. It is believed that this number is set to increase if some sort of gambling reform does not take place.

Break Da Bank Again Relaunched with Respins

Microgaming-owned developing house Gameburger Studios has relaunched the publishers Break Da Bank Again pokie with new exciting features. Dubbed Break Da Bank Again Respin, the game adds a new respin feature (as one may have guessed from the name) called Hyperspins, which promises to give New Zealand players extra chances to win big real money prizes.

But, that not all; the game has also had its RTP percentage adjusted to a rate more in favor of the player. Graphics have also been remastered to ensure that players receive a more modern gaming experience with exciting sounds and visuals that players are sure to love.

Break Da Bank Again Respin Details

The title maintains the game’s original five-reel, nine payline layout and the symbols all work in the same manner as that of the base game. That means that the safe symbol is still the scatter and the game’s logo acts as the wild symbol, which can be used to complete winning combinations. To activate the game’s free spins mode, players need to land at least three scatter symbols on the reels, and they will be rewarded with between 15 and 25 free spins.

The great thing about the free spins’ mode is that the opportunity to win big is exemplified by the fact that the wild symbol acts as a massive 25x multiplier when completing winning combinations. (This is opposed to the 5x multiplier it already is in the title’s regular game mode.)

However, the game’s new Hyperspins feature will provide players with the opportunity to purchase extra paid respins, which they will be able to use strategically on a single reel if they choose to do so. This means completing insanely profitable combinations is now more possible, and that a slot game finally has some element of planning and strategy to it.

Speaking on the new feature, Creative Designer of Gameburger Studios Matt Carvajal stated that the studio is particularly “proud of the Hyperspins feature” and that the “studio can’t wait for players to experience the game”.

Tiki Vikings is Microgaming’s August 2019 Hit Exclusive Slot Game

Tiki Vikings is the newest slot game to be added to the Microgaming game collection, and it really seems to feature a theme combination that we never knew we needed. Developed by Just For The Win, the game meshes tiki stylings with the ancient traditions of the Vikings – two cultures that could literally never be further apart. Released on 7 August, the game offers New Zealand players a wonderful chance to win big real money prizes.

Speaking on the new title, Microgaming Director of Global Operations James Buchanan stated that the game is another “entertaining and highly original slot game” that offers players the potential to win “huge rewards.”

Tiki Vikings Gameplay and Design

Tiki Vikings is a five-reel pokie title with five reels, three rows and 20 paylines. The game’s design is rather interesting and features graphics that are enjoyable to look at, with colours that also just make everything seem so exciting. If anything is for sure, you’ll want to spend some time spinning the reels just so you can see some of the beautiful images.

The game’s symbols consist of a combination of theme-related and traditional playing card designs. Some of the theme-inspired designs include a couple of Viking warriors and the game’s logo. There does not seem to be a wild or scatter symbol, but rest assured that there are other ways to increase your wins with bonuses.

The game features two rather unique bonus modes. These include the following:

  • Symbol Lock Respins – this feature locks winning symbols that consist of a theme-related set of symbols in place and award players with a free spin. Players get an additional free spin if they are able to get more matching symbols with the respin. They will continue to get free spins until the Symbol Upgrade meter is filled.
  • Symbol Upgrades – if players are able to fill this meter, all symbols will upgrade to the next valuable symbol in the Symbol Lock mode. Unfortunately, once you reach the symbol with the highest value, it will not upgrade any further.

Tiki Vikings Final Rating

Tiki Vikings seems like a fine addition to the Microgaming library. Although it does not feature any wilds or a standard free spins feature, it does have a few bonus modes that could prove to be rather rewarding. We heartily recommend that players give the game a go.

UK Surgery Manager Steals NZ$1.3 Million from Staff Wages Due to Gambling Addiction

A UK surgery manager has received a three-year prison sentence after embezzling close to NZ$1.3 million in National Health Service (NHS) funds meant for staff wages and serious medical supplies in order to feed her out-of-control gambling habit.

Karen Evans – the surgery manager in question – has been convicted of falsifying records of hundreds of patients in order to help her misappropriate funds for a period exceeding 15 months. It is said that she used the ill-gotten gains for a number of things, including paying her debts, a holiday, and some spa treatments. However, most of the money was confirmed to be going to online betting applications, such as SkyBet and Galla Bingo, among others.

Surgery Manager’s Crime

Evans was able to misappropriate funds by falsifying patient records (including marking some patients for end of life care). In total, 323 patients had their medical records tampered with in order to cover up her scheme.

The crime was eventually uncovered when the Failsworth Group had to request an overdraft to pay the staff. The odd turn of events led to an investigation being launched by doctors in charge of the group to understand the root cause of this dilemma. It was also later discovered that Evans had also performed the same scheme at another medical group some years before in which she was able to get away with just over NZ$1.4 million.

Evans stated that it was her desire to escape her drug addiction and relationship filled with domestic violence that led her to steal from the medial practice.

Theft Takes Its Toll on the NHS

As a result of Evans’ crime, four doctors at the hospital she managed were forced to leave their positions. The overall nature of the scam also led to some patients suffering great distress due to thinking that their lives were possibly in danger when they were incorrectly marked for end of life care.

Announcing the sentence, Judge Maurice Greene stated that her crime was very “cruel” and has negatively affected the community. It seems that Evans now has a court-mandated escape from her gambling addiction.

Best Poker Tournament Strategy for NZ Players

Our experts have tried several different strategies and tips at poker tournaments and those listed below have proven to be rather helpful in creating a winning poker strategy.

  • Suss Out the Opposition – although this is more applicable to offline tournaments, try to identify weaker players and sit at their tables. This is a good way to win at least some money. We do suggest that you be very careful of calling raises on hand that feature cards A-J in early stages. This is due to the fact that bad players tend to be a bit erratic in the way that they play and may go all-in on a weak hand in an attempt to bluff their opposition.
  • Avoid Placing Big Money on Speculative Hands Early – it may not be advisable to place big bets on speculative hands from the get-go. While a hand that starts with A-K may seem promising, there is still a chance that it good go wrong and the final score of your hand is simply a high card. Don’t start taking risks on such hands until during later stages of the tournament.
  • Raise Raisers – while online poker has been known to be rather aggressive, one good way to call another player’s buff is to raise on their raise. This is especially true if you are still in the bubble and there are other players raising a load of different hands.
  • Use the Opposite Playstyle to What is Being Used at the Table – while you may only be able to implement this strategy after a few rounds of play, it could prove to be rather useful. If you notice that the other players at your table are playing loosely or tightly, do a 180 and make use of the opposite playstyle.
